Curriculum Intent

Imagination, innovation, creativity, and expression are core aspects of human identity. At Sir Thomas Wharton Academy, we are dedicated to nurturing the creative potential within every student. Our inclusive and well-rounded Art and Design curriculum aims to develop independent learners, critical thinkers, and problem solvers, empowering them to communicate their ideas and creativity through visual art.

In Years 7 and 8, students are introduced to foundational skills in drawing, painting, patternmaking, and analysis. These core competencies enable them to grasp visual language and effectively express their creative ideas. By the end of Year 9, students will have developed the ability to think both creatively and critically. They will engage with the work of past and contemporary artists, evaluating a wide range of artistic outcomes, and gain insight into the diverse disciplines within Art and Design. They will begin to independently explore various materials and techniques to create their own artistic solutions.

As students' progress from GCSE to A Level, the Art and Design curriculum continues to foster a deep engagement with creative practice. It prepares students to become confident future professionals who can independently create work that reflects cultural issues and demonstrates emotional awareness of society. Through both traditional and contemporary sources, including Fine Art and Photography, students will draw inspiration from the natural world and develop a strong sense of personal identity. They will explore how artists respond to human issues and shared global concerns through their work.
